Day tickets or a monthly pass?
Commute cost calculator
Estimate monthly park-and-ride spending from your travel days, daily parking and return fare. Compare a monthly pass, including the parking it leaves you to pay, and find the first whole day it saves money.

The monthly cost formula
Monthly travel days = travel days per week × weeks per month, or your entered actual monthly days. Day-ticket spending = monthly travel days × (daily parking + daily return fare).
For a transport-only pass, monthly spending = pass price + monthly travel days × daily parking. When a pass includes parking as well, monthly spending = pass price. The comparison assumes you buy one pass covering the same period as the day-ticket estimate.
How many days make a monthly pass worthwhile?
Divide the pass price by the daily cost it replaces. A transport-only pass replaces the return fare; a pass covering both replaces parking plus the return fare. If the answer is a whole number, that day is a tie: the following day is the first saving. If the replaced daily cost is £0, a paid pass cannot save money on these inputs.
Worked example: three days a week
At 3 days per week × 52 ÷ 12 weeks, the average is 13 travel days a month. With £2 daily parking and a £5 return fare, day-ticket spending is £91. An illustrative £60 transport-only pass still needs £26 parking, giving £86 total: £5 less.
The pass equals 12 × £5 return fares, so 12 days is a tie and day 13 is the first saving. If the same £60 pass also includes parking, it first saves money on day 9 (£63 day-ticket spending versus £60).
Plan for the month you actually travel
Weekly averages spread travel across a year; they do not deduct annual leave or bank holidays. Use actual monthly days when comparing a calendar-month pass, especially with hybrid working. Four-week tickets, flexi bundles and annual passes have different validity periods: compare those separately rather than treating them as monthly passes.
Fuel, time, refunds, tax treatment and other travel expenses are outside this estimate. A pass may be useful for other trips, but their value is not included. For a family or group outing, try the whole-trip park-and-ride cost calculator.
Use the right local ticket rules
Ticket conditions vary by operator and location. Check child ages, accompanying-adult rules, group limits, travel times, routes, zones and whether a return is included before entering a price. Unknown prices should be checked, not entered as zero.
Our methodology separates parking from transport because an offer may combine them or cover only one. For a combined ticket, enter its full amount once and set the other component to £0 only when inclusion is confirmed. These calculators compare entered costs; they do not verify availability, eligibility or live tariffs.
