Whole-party journey costs

Park-and-ride cost calculator

Compare the whole cost for adults and children: parking, return tickets and optional driving fuel. Test an eligible group ticket against individual fares, then compare with city-centre parking.

1. Who is travelling?
Use the operator’s adult age band.
Use the operator’s child age band.
2. Parking and individual return fares
Total for your whole stay. If included in a ticket, do not count twice.
A return or day ticket covering both directions.
Confirm any free-child conditions before entering £0.
Use the same length of stay. Add any applicable driving charges here.
3. Optional group return ticket

This compares one ticket covering your entire party. Check all operator conditions, including minimum adults and child ages. It does not combine group tickets with extra individual tickets.

Leave blank if unavailable. Parking is added separately.
Enter all three limits from the ticket terms.
4. Optional driving fuel or energy
Both driving directions, not the bus journey.
Both driving directions.
Example: £0.18 means 18p per mile. This is not a live fuel price.

All example values are illustrative inputs, not live fares. Amounts are in pounds sterling (£).

Your cost comparison

Change the illustrative figures to match your journey, then calculate.

How the comparison works

  1. Individual return tickets = adults × adult return fare + children × child return fare.
  2. An entered group ticket is considered only after eligibility is confirmed and all three limits are met. The lower eligible ticket total is selected.
  3. Park-and-ride total = parking + selected return tickets + optional return driving miles × fuel or energy cost per mile.
  4. City-centre total = city-centre parking + optional return driving miles × the same cost per mile.

Calculations retain their precision; displayed currency rounds to the nearest penny. Parking is per vehicle, tickets are per person or per whole group, and each distance is a return distance.

Worked example: two adults and two children

These made-up values demonstrate the method. At £4 per adult return and £1 per child return, individual tickets total £10. Add £2 parking for a £12 park-and-ride trip, compared with £15 city-centre parking: a £3 difference before fuel.

If an £8 group return ticket genuinely covers that party, the park-and-ride total becomes £10. With 14 return miles to the site, 18 return miles to the centre and an illustrative £0.18 per mile, totals become £12.52 and £18.24 respectively: a £5.72 difference.

What is outside this estimate?

The calculator covers one vehicle. Split a larger party across separate calculations if you need multiple vehicles. It excludes time, insurance, depreciation, parking availability and any unentered charges. Free-child allowances linked to adult numbers, minimum group sizes and concessionary time limits must be checked manually. A cheaper option may have a longer journey or an earlier last return.

For repeated journeys, use the monthly commute cost calculator.

Use the right local ticket rules

Ticket conditions vary by operator and location. Check child ages, accompanying-adult rules, group limits, travel times, routes, zones and whether a return is included before entering a price. Unknown prices should be checked, not entered as zero.

Our methodology separates parking from transport because an offer may combine them or cover only one. For a combined ticket, enter its full amount once and set the other component to £0 only when inclusion is confirmed. These calculators compare entered costs; they do not verify availability, eligibility or live tariffs.

Travelwest’s official park-and-ride FAQs explain that fares differ by location and link to local fare information. Read the relevant operator’s terms for your trip. Method reviewed 19 October 2026.
